I talked with Chris Theisen at @HareChevy As a corporate sponsor Chris and Hare Chevrolet agreed to put together the nomination form and final ballot using @formstack Thanks Chris!

    CLARIFICATIONS ON ABOVE RULES:

The phrase”ACTIVELY participating…” will be changed to “All nominees must have a social media presence on at least three major platforms.” This could be a personal or a work related presence (It is – after all – a social media event )
    ——–
Grooviest “Campaign” clarification — can mean:
    1) Overall Social Media activity
    2) a Social Media strategy launching a business or new product line
    3) a Social Media promotion / giveaway

Ethics … is a branch of philosophy which seeks to address questions about morality; that is, about concepts such as good and bad, right and wrong, justice, and virtue. – wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethics
The Most Ethical Social Media Company can be defined as a company whose actions are virtuous:
    # the quality of doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong

    # a particular moral excellence
    wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Examples of Ethical actions may include:
    # Dealing fairly with prices and services – not OVER charging
    # Recommending another company that may do a better job, even if it’s a competitor
    # Giving credit where credit is due – NOT stealing someone else’s work (like plagiarizing a blog)
    # Returning phone calls and answering correspondence in a timely fashion

Please forgive the long delay in updating. It’s the most wonderful time of the year and also the most exhausting! As of 11:54pm 12-23-09 There are a total of 286 bit.ly clicks to the ballot and 95 ballots have been completed. Can I just say, WOW!
It looks as if #nwindiana means business as they are leading in all three categories. Dave Woodson is in the lead for Dude with 17% of the vote. Kathy Sipple has captured a whopping 33% of the votes for most influential Dame, and Laurie Griffith has 22% of the votes as an up & comer.

I will only post updates sporadically over the next few days -for obvious reasons- but I stayed up way past my bedtime tonight to thank everyone involved for their AWESOMENESS. To my knowledge, no other state is doing something even remotely similar to this. It feels good to have #Indiana lead a social media initiative. Bravo!

Merry Christmas and God Bless us, everyone!

It was my understanding the ballot on formspring allowed for just one completed ballot per IP address, but I am no expert on hacking. The nominees are randomized each time on the ballot plus there’s the captcha thingy at the bottom of the form. Beyond that it is based on the honor system and a naive hope that people would play fairly.

It would have been WONDERFUL if someone with more technological experience in hacking had been able to donate time and talent to set up an air-tight voting process, but I could only afford free applications -Smaller #Indiana, twitter, formspring, Tweetbrite, etc.. and roughly $20 for the trophies.

If someone wants to win badly enough, I suppose they could find a way around anything. The person with the most votes at this point is Kathy Sipple with 56, so I doubt there’s been any mischief so far.

Here are the ACTUAL Large and Impressive Trophies that will be awarded to the most influential Social Media Dude and Dame. I hope no one would compromise their ethics for bragging rights and 18 inches of metal with a marble base. They may do stuff like that on the East and Left coasts but surely not here in #Indiana.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you in Indy in a few days. Since I’m in the lead right now (for Dame), I feel I need to say that I have not encouraged any multi-voting or other “monkey business” among my supporters. I did post links on Twitter and on my Facebook fan page, as well as sent personal messages to clients and students via email or LinkedIn. Amy, I appreciate your efforts on this and if I do win, I want it to mean something! Thanks again and I hope it will be a fun time for all.

I’m not doing any campaigning. I am not sure if this process benefits from self-promotion, or if advertisement only serves to interrupt others and thus sour public opinion of social media.

Unlike a traditional vote in which the electorate is already a predetermined size, this contest will be won not by convincing a majority but by motivating the largest number of people. So for me, the great honor is to be nominated and get to spend time with you fine people. Whatever the outcome, I can’t wait for the luncheon!

I would assume Amy’s intent on this contest was less about defining an actual calculation of who is most influential, but simply to have fun and bring together a great group of passionate people that strongly believe in the power of social media with the hopes that it would create a discussion on how to best get Indiana firmly planted on the social media map in 2010.

    ………Am I missing something?

@amystark well done, although the goal may have been a get together with the #indiana influentia on Wednesday to toast the New Year … you have succeeded in also introducing us all to important viewpoints, debates, and philosophies in this 3 year old industry. The sky’s the limit in 2010. Keep collaborating all.

From the Wall of Robby Gehlhausen Slaughter
Hear ye, hear ye! I have been appointed head of the governing committee for the 2010 Indiana Social Media SMackdown! I need committee members. I will accept up to five members, and will make my final decision on committee members by midnight on Sept 30, 2010.

    – Committee members will not be eligible to be a candidate in… the competition.
    – The committee will define and publish guidelines for “reasonable nominations” and accept nominations from the public
    – The committee will decide by unanimous vote if a proposed nominee shall be included on the ballot
    – I reserve the right to remove a committee member at any time, with or without cause.

    That is all.

I forgot to mention that I selected the list of nominees to be “Randomized” so that no one has a chance to win simply because their name always appears first among the choices.

Voting will be run on the Honor System (this may be naive, but I trust #Indiana folk-for the most part). Before voting in each category, the voter must answer two “yes or no” questions:

    1. The Dude I am voting for abides by the THARG principles in his social media interactions and his face-to-face relationships. THARG = Transparency, Honesty, Authenticity, Reciprocity and Gratuity.

    2. I view this Dude as the MOST INFLUENTIAL #Indiana Social Media proponent among the nominees listed below — NOT simply the most popular or a personal favorite.

No one has kibitzed yet, and the bit.ly link has been clicked 31 times as of 1:17 pm et 12-23-09.

…With 132 ballots completed I am pleased to report there are a few who actually clicked, “I am only voting because the nominee asked me to and I haven’t given it much thought.” I like that kind of honesty. =)

I was able to turn on private browsing and submit multiple times to your form. Are you doing anything to ensure people voting don’t vote multiple times? Or is this just a free-for-all to the person who just sits at a computer and makes a thousand votes?

@doug, if Private Browsing fools the IP address detector at FormSpring, that’s something you should pass along to them to fix!

    ——————-
@amy We all appreciate you running the contest, but as you’ve identified no online poll can be considered fair. (http://musicmachinery.com/2009/04/15/inside-the-precision-hack/) Perhaps in the future, you can have a “judges award” in which you ask some people to select the winner.

I have been out of the loop with the holidays and have not monitored this closely.

Amy, You can see IP addresses on form submissions but not limit by IP address. To add multiple entries a user could simply refresh their browser and resubmit.

You can make fields unique http://support.formspring.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=5 to limit submissions for example, by email address. That might have been a better way to do it.

I wanted to be as hands off on this as much as possible so as not to appear that our company was trying to “profit” from Amy’s idea. We gave her a tool to help simplify the process to show our support of this fun event. If we had worked a bit more closely together or provided her more guidance we may have been able to show her some ways to limit submissions, etc. I think the spirit of this “contest” is well intentioned and Amy has done a good job setting it up.
