In a DM early on Tuesday, Chuck Gose expressed his concerns about the attendee list in a few DMs.

… I know it’s frustrating for nominees not to be able to register. They should come before “elite.”
I’m thankful he brought this up, because it forced me to better define the term “Elites” and present my rationale behind this policy.
Elites include — Members of the Press, Companies who have aggressively supported #IN_SM10 w/ time or talent, last year’s winners, and active participants who have been spreading the #IN_SM10 mission. They are more important to the long-term success of the Indiana Social Media Summit and its mission to create Goodwill and Unity. Nominees are who they are because one person spent the energy to nominate them.
Some folk deserve the privilege of sitting “In the room” because of their contributions to shaping the #Indiana Social Media Scene. That’s why I held back 30 seats for last minute “Elites” who deserve to be in the Blues Brothers room where the action will take place.
Discretionary VIPs who would be considered Elites = Press, Companies who have aggressively supported #IN_SM10 w/ time or talent, last year’s winners, and active participants who have been spreading the #IN_SM10 mission.

@Rahsaan -You are correct, this has many characteristics of a High School popularity contest. Lots of people who are deserving of the title Most INfluential or Grooviest are not on the final ballot and lots of cities and towns throughout Indiana are not represented. But progress is being made. Last year we had just ONE location and this year there will be five. Last year if people outside of Scotty’s wanted to join in the fun they had to watch the hashtag, this year Kevin Mullett and Rocky Walls coordinated on providing a UStream broadcast so that even people from Sweden can watch the festivities. Last year virtually all nominees were from Central Indiana and the NWIndiana group, this year we have nominees from the Banks of the Wabash to the shores of Lake Michigan. =) Oh, by the way, you are quite possibly the coolest person I’ll ever meet. =)
@Richard – My favorite thing about you is you call ’em like you see ’em. My second favorite thing about you is you are not shy about sharing your opinion. I will take your suggestions to heart and it will make for a better SMackdown next year. Don’t for a minute think I’m not going to take you up on your offer to help. =)
To start off, I was one of those people missed the things about the tickets. I think next year there needs to be a little more consolidation of the information because it was hard to follow in general with things being on this blog/FB page/twitter and not seeming to always be in sync. Also even when you knew there was information out there it was hard to find because of this. I believe that this really is a perfect example of some of the flaws of these mediums and tools in general, but me and Amy can argue about that tomorrow (crap guess it’s today now.) I’m also willing to help by putting my money (time is money 😉 ) where my mouth is and say that I’m willing to throw in my hat to help next year in getting things sorted out and smooth.
BUT, this was all done by people trying to do things for free and putting their own time. This thing isn’t anyone’s full time job nor is anyone really profiting from it (well other then @brewhouse taking our beer money) so you really have to cut them some slack. This isn’t a serious event and there is nothing serious tied to winning. You can’t expect it to be perfect and go 100% smoothly. Amy had a call out for help a few months ago and some people stepped up to help and they have done a great job with what they have.
As well, being a free event, @brewhouse stepped up and said they would host it which is great and that they could accommodate 60 people in banquet room plus more outside of it. To move venues this late is harsh to @brewhouse who is helping out. Looking at the fact that there is still double digit tickets left on eventbrite I don’t think there was the crazy demand people thought (well or those people still don’t know they need to go get them. Again, crappy medium. 🙂 )
Overall I think Amy is doing a valiant thing in trying to bring some “state spirit” to the SM community. She has tried to be inclusive of all areas and I don’t believe she has played favorites in any way. Anyone who helped (and also disqualified themself from running) getting fist dibs on a ticket isn’t really that big of a deal (though maybe you shouldn’t have called them elites 🙂 ) This event is actually accomplishing “level playing field” on the whole, especially better then other “Indiana” events I’ve seen that have been really Indy centric and, even worse, inclusive inside of specific Indy cliques.
So I’ll ditto what Harrison said and say thanks Amy for putting it together and you are doing a great job and it will only get better.
P.S. Why is it always the people who are going to lose anyways that step down? To protect their pride? Why not just face that you are going to get beat down by a giant asshole in a Care Bear costume in a Niceness competition like a man. 🙂
Now I am not trying to insult anyone with this comment, but by nature any competition that requires voting for a person to win is, at its roots, a “popularity contest”. It doesn’t make much sense to complain about the results because the reason why someone got a vote is because someone took the time to actually vote for them. That in itself speaks volumes for the people who got more than one vote. I only know a couple of names on the list and I voted for the ones that I know that I felt were worthy of winning.
I think that this is a fun event and I will say that I think that Amy Stark and who ever else are the organizers are doing a great job at trying to bring something unique and interesting to Indiana Social Media.
It is like that saying, “Opinions are like something or another…”

EventBrite is a great platform, the facebook page is rocking, the Twitter hashtag #IN_SM has been very active and helpful, and I think Amy did a great job working with an all volunteer workforce….and that is ever easy!!
My only criticism is that people seem to take these type of things way too seriously. This event is simply a time to enjoy one another and connect with some amazing people. So let’s have a great time tomorrow, and don’t think of it as an end to 2010, but a fantastic start to 2011!!!!!!

Hey @theAaronCraig – I’m sad to learn you’re offended by my disclosure of a snippet of Chuck Gose’s DM. My intent was to showcase his concern for all nominees and how he was spending time and effort to champion their cause. I found it admirable and befitting behavior of #Indiana’s INaugural Most INfluential Social Media Dude.
By sharing Chuck’s snippet I was also able to share my rationale for the selection of “Elites”. I’m sorry you don’t agree with my methods, but it is a difference of opinion and I stand by my definition of elites and the important role they play in sustaining the Indiana Social Media Summit’s mission.
I hope you reconsider joining us, but if not I want to thank you for your input along the way and want to set up a time mid January when we can enjoy a delicious cup of joe and discuss how you would like to help make it better next year. =)
Hey Lorraine, Thanks for the comment I appreciate any and all feedback. Let me clear some things up.
1) If you look at the list above – I’ve reserved a ticket for Allison, Jay and two for you. I haven’t seen the video yet, but I will add one for Taylor as well. Please keep in mind that this is a STATEWIDE event and lots of nominees will be at satellite locations.
2) No emails or special invites were sent to nominees. Invitations and pre-public offering tickets were made available to “elites” – as defined above – before opening the seats up to the public in general. Please keep in mind, Scotty’s will be open to the public and anyone can enjoy a tasty lunch and be close to the festivities. If a nominee is enjoying lunch in another part of the restaurant and they learn via UStream or #IN_SM10 hashtag that they won a major award, they’ll just have to walk a little further.
3) You mentioned next year “WE need to make it easier for people to participate”. I hope that means you will recommend another groovy #Indiana company to help with the reservations set-up for next year. But this year there is no “WE” it’s just me where the reserved seats are concerned.
4) At this moment – Wednesday 12-29 Morning – there is no place to register. When I can connect with all the peeps above and get a response, I will open up registration to the public in general. HOWEVER -I recommend people plan to have lunch at Scotty’s whether they are “in the room” or not.
Lorraine, I’m so glad you are paying attention and giving constructive criticism because I know that means you care enough about the event to see its continued success. I can’t wait to give you a hug on Thursday!

I am withdrawing my nomination as the “Nicest Guy.” I am very disappointed in how this competition has been run. It has been poorly managed. I also take offense to the special invite. It should be first come, first serve… and that’s it. I feel like this is turning into “A favorite’s” event. Also, a change of venue might have been helpful when you realized how much interest this event had.
But what really upsets me is that you publicized a DM without getting permission from the person who sent it to you. That is a huge Twitter violation. DM’s are private. Chuck sent that DM to you and only you. You had no right to make that public knowledge.
I hope that you rethink things next year.

Jay, Allison and Taylor would all like to go, but it is really hard to figure out how and where to register, when none of us received the email link which was supposed to go to the nominees to register.
We have been actively supporting the event, taking time to film video promos with BG Kahuna, and would really like to be a part of the event. But honestly, I still don’t know where the eventbrite registration form is.
The event was a lot fun last year, and I am looking forward to it, but next year, we need to make it easier for people to participate. – Please
