Does Duplicate Social Media Content Help or Hurt SEO ?

Two of my closest friends — both Internet geeks and people I trust — told me that if you have a blog to which you regularly post, you should NOT post the same content on an aggregator site like ezine, etc… because Google will ding you for it. Did any of you guys – gender neutral of course — blog about this? Someone asked me to look into it and I want to be able to explain it clearly.

o Douglas Karr:
I hope you didn’t get that info from me ;) . There is NO such thing as a duplicate content penalty. However, by posting in multiple places, you can lose some search authority because links would be split between multiple sites. That said, if the benefits of exposing that content reaches a great audience, go for it. Social Media Today picks up a post of mine drone time to time and I appreciate the great exposure they bring me.

o Kevin Mullet:
I don’t have a blog on it, but it seems as though I should. A couple of thoughts.
Google has stated that duplicate content is not a penalization but rather you don’t gain anything for it. I might argue that you would still have a backlink but the quality of that backlink has many variables attached to it.
That said they did just release an update to GWT (Google Webmaster Tools) that provides a notification to webmasters of ‘low quality content.’ I am forced to speculate that duplicate content certainly may qualify as low quality.

Another point to confuse things further, John Mueller (Google) has stated that as little as a couple of sentences worth of change can pass the duplicate algo.
We also recently did a large scale client correction job that involved duplicate content revision. This resulted in 20% increase in vertical sites on page one for target location + kw.

While all of the search stuff mentioned is good – the 800 lbs gorilla in the house isn’t being mentioned.
Conversion rates from the referral traffic caused from “syndicated” content in 100% of the inferences I’ve looked at out pace organic search conversions by 5+x’s. In our websites case it’s 1.5% versus 5+% conversion rate. You have to decide which is more valuable to the business. You shouldn’t worry about where a website ranks at all – It’s pointless because 50% of the traffic can’t be tracked back to the words. Instead measure how many keywords drive traffic regardless of where they rank. If you grow that metric your client will be very happy because the traffic will poor in. You do that by creating and publishing content daily or more.

o Bengt Wendel:
Great content attracts traffic. Using the same content on several sites is a bad idea as far as I understand the Google rules.

o Kevin Mullett:
Chad, Doug eluded to that briefly in his response and even mentioned where he gets traffic for, but that doesn’t explain the duplicate issue. Certainly conversion and other factors must be considered. Also is your example for a business, with local intent, a blog, or what? That will change methodology as well.

Great discussion. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I’m a non-guru, so all I can share is my personal experience. I’ve had great experiences posting edited content to other sites. The approach I take is to slightly modify the content to fit the site’s audience, and I share multiple links back to my site in the text. Not a huge factor in terms of Google rankings, but I consistently get hundreds of hits from my “mirror” posts, even from posts that were shared over five years ago. Wonderful topic, Amy. Chad – I agree that producing good content consistently and posting it on your site is the best answer to drive revenue- BUT the person who asked me specifically wanted to answer the question, “If I post a blog and duplicate the other content on places like ezine, will that help or hurt my SEO”

Pamela – You’re welcome! I have a vague memory of seeing an article of yours from ezine passing by in my facebook stream. Since the person asking me spoke specifically about ezine, I wanted to hear your take. And, btw, your blogging longevity and consistency makes you a guru whether you like it or not. The fact that you know you have received traffic from those sites is HUGE. Thanks!

At the end of the day I doubt any of us can say with 100% accuracy. The only thing we know for sure is that Google is in a state of constant change. The only sure way to know what works is by measuring everything you do and analyze the data always. There is no auto-pilot solutions, digital has never been more fluid, and this trend is NOT going to change. What works for one blog/company might not work for another. Amy Stark is very smart to tag such a great group of folks to get a solid overall perspective and I’m honored to be mentioned in such an amazing group.

o Kevin Mullett:
Amy think of it like this. Example…. 250+ local manufacturing dealers in different cities (well a few in a shared market) all have the same top level pages with duplicate content, save for location and branded term, because that is what the manufacturer sent them. We came in and tweaked that content to not appear to be duplicate and to better serve the users. This resulted in the aforementioned increase in both #1 position but also page one presence for organic (location + 1 word KW). Additional gains were seen for secondary locations.
*NO WE DIDN’T STOP with SERP evaluation but for the purpose of duplicate content convo…that is what I am mentioning.*
Gains were realized in first 2 week report but are still growing. What is unique is how controlled the example was. The ONLY thing changed was the page body content! We were not introducing other variables that could destroy the sample. *No title tags, descriptions, H1′s, anchor text, alt tags, pictures, etc etc where changed.* I repeat, BODY content only.
Now remember these are 250 individual dealers with almost exactly the same manufacture provided site, on unique URLs. So… clearly putting content out to 3rd party content distribution sites, which would have a different design, pictures, structure, links, footer, et al, would benefit from tweaked for that audience content as well.
We will be turning the whole thing into a case study post, but we are waiting for trending data and March numbers because it appears it is still gaining. I can’t get much more specific (pretty freaking specific already) than that, but it is hard to argue with this scale of a controlled sample as it pertains directly to how Google looks at duplicate content found on separate domains. BTW, 95% of these are already number 1 on Bing for (location + 1 word KW). Bing didn’t seem to care about duplicate content in this sample. Peace!
